Flan's PC Build 2012 / 2013

Update - Version 2 - Lets see if the eagle eyed will notice the component changes

This page will act as a progress report for my new PC build.

This will be a slow moving project until I get a job and have more funds available

I was going to have this on Facebook as well, but since you cannot edit previous posts or comments, I am removing it from Facebook and going to put it here instead

It is almost 4 years ago where I have done a complete build of a new PC. In those 4 years I have been doing mini upgrades to keep the PC up to date technology wise as much as possible, but it is an expensive cat and mouse game, because technology is so fast moving, most components are out of date from the time they are announced till the time they are available for purchase and often go out of stock permanently.

The other reason is I have 2 PC's which are taking up a lot of room, I am looking at reducing it to 1 PC, have not fully decided on how this will work out yet

Also I have had a few component failures in the last year, the most recent been my gaming dual graphics card, my monitor died, 2 x 300GB Western Digital Velocity Raptors are making funny noises and I have had 2 x 4GB memory sticks fail as well. The graphics card and the monitor are out of warranty. The memory and the 2 x 300GB Western Digital Velocity Raptors will hopefully be replaced under warranty.

As a result of this upgrade there will be a number of items for sale after the build is complete, if any one is interested.

X79 or not - that is the question

The 2 main chipsets from Intel are X79 for the enthusiast and Z77 for the mainstream

The CPU's from intel for X79 is Sandybridge -E , and Sandy bridge & Ivy bridge for Z77.

Sandy bridge is second generation and is available as i3, i5 and i7 and is a quad core CPU with dual channel DDR3 memory and and uses the LGA1155 socket and is compatible with Z77 motherboards

Sandy bridge-E is second generation and is available as i7 only and is a 6 core CPU with quad channel memory DDR3 memory and uses a new socket LGA2011 which is not compatible with Sandy bridge, Ivy bridge or LGA1366 X58

Ivy bridge is 3rd generation and is available as i3, i5 and i7 and is a quad core CPU with dual channel DDR3 memory and uses the LGA1155 socket and is compatible with the previous P67 and Z68 chipsets with a Bios update

I will be going for Z77 and Ivy bridge surprisingly enough as I always try to future proof as much as possible.

From the reviews I've read and the general consensus is, X79 is for huge video editing and rendering and massive photo shopping which huge amount of layers and stitching, there is very little gaming performance difference from Ivy bridge with a good graphics card and the high cost of X79 and Sandy Bridge-E

Reviews I will be using for tips and advice will be from:

1. Asus YouTube Channel -

2. TimeToLiveCustoms YouTube Channel -

3. Linus Tech Tips -

4. Newegg TV -

5. Tek Syndicate -

6. Carey Holzman's Channel -

The videos on Asus are the most detailed I have found or seen regarding motherboard info, he goes in to minute detail regarding the specs and features of the motherboards, and the videos can be quite long

The videos on TimeToLiveCustoms are the most detailed I have found or seen as well, he covers everything about what will and wont fit in cases, builds computer systems from scratch, including systems with watercooling, and some videos are over 30 minutes long

The components I will be using for this build, are listed below, with links to manufacturer sites, Reviews and YouTube Videos where available

Info and Specs from Manufacturer - http://www.mionix.net/page.php?al=naos5000 That is the end of the component list, some of the components may look extreme and the prices also, but I am building this to cover me for the next couple of years, and because I am buying only 1 or 2 components at a time, I won't have to fork out the whole amount at once. Some of these components may need to be changed due to supply or model changes by manufacturers at the time of purchase, if that is the case they will be noted here. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Component Order Progress Every time a component is ordered or has arrived, I will post the following excel sheet. I will try and wait, if I don't get too excited, till all the major components are here before I start to do the build.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Build I will be posting photos and maybe videos at each stage of the build below

  1. Brilliant stuff Flan..Pmc

  2. Have a look at this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231490

  3. Hi Flan You might ask that the CAPTCHA is changed. It takes about 10-15 attempts to post to your blog. Pmc

  4. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231490

  5. @pmc - the reason the CAPTCHA is there is to prevent spam, i have it removed for now, but if i start getting spammed with shite / spam comments i will have to enable CAPTCHA again

i have looked at the links, those are in red, the reason i have selected the ones in the blog, is that they are blue and will match the blue theme of the motherboard. if the ones in the link you provided come in blue i would consider getting them, the price is quite good, although prices of RAM is at rock bottom now, so if anyone is thinking of buying more RAM, now is the time to do it.

  6. Hi there, i read your blog occasionally and i own a similar one and i was just wondering if you get a lot of
spam feedback? If so how do you stop it, any plugin or anything you can advise?
I get so much lately it's driving me crazy so any help is very much appreciated.
    my page > raid

  7. i am lucky so far, i have very little to no spam. the only way that might stop it is to enable Captcha. it might deter people from posting. i have it disabled at the moment, but if i start to get large amounts of spam i will enable CAPTCHA again
